Photovoltaic solar pumping: what it is and how it works

As professionals in photovoltaic solar energy, we are dedicated to all the applications that it may have, and today we want to talk to you about how with solar energy we can power a photovoltaic solar water pump , one of the most innovative applications of solar energy , in supply direct (without batteries)

But what is a pumping system?

Pumping equipment is a mechanism to extract, raise or propel water and direct it to a certain point. They are systems whose main function is to raise and extract water, propelling it by different types of energy; Among the main ones are: electric energy, fossil fuels (using motor pumps) and wind power. They are used above all to irrigate crops, fill ponds or swamps , maintain livestock farms, etc. often in places where electricity and water supply networks do not reach , especially in rural areas that depend on these systems for their survival.

Types of pumping systems

We can talk about 2 types of pumping system:

  • Centrifugal pumping: based on the use of a surface hydraulic pump, with a vertical or horizontal axis, depending on the characteristics of the terrain and its needs.
  • Submersible pumping: the pump works submerged in the fluid to be pumped and works with an electrical system protected by being submerged.

All of them can work with a direct photovoltaic solar system or with battery accumulation : this first is the system that interests us the most, since it works directly thanks to the energy of the sun and which we are going to talk about in more detail below.

What is a photovoltaic solar pumping system?

Photovoltaic solar pumping.Solar pumping systems are those that work thanks to the electrical energy generated by solar panels . Thus, its main characteristic is that it is based on the use of energy, inexhaustible, free and non-polluting. Electrical energy is a sustainable and renewable source, more sustainable than other types of energy both economically and environmentally, since in addition to avoiding CO2 emissions, the economic cost can be reduced by a very high percentage, even having an installation self-sufficient if used during the daily isolation period, or with battery accumulation, to be used 24 hours a day. Although the latter can be replaced by the accumulation of water at height, through rafts that will then provide us with a water supply by gravity, without the need to use any other type of energy than gravitational energy.

Furthermore, as we mentioned before, this system is ideal for those isolated facilities that are not reached by water supply networks and/or that do not have access to the electrical network.

How does a photovoltaic solar pumping system work?

The photovoltaic energy captured by the solar panels is converted into electrical energy , which is transmitted to the pump through a frequency converter or controller, which maximizes the performance of the installation, controlling the moments of lowest and highest solar radiation and modifying, according to these parameters , the rotation speed of the pump.

The pump connected to the drive will push the water to the area we want through pipes.

Thus, the drive operates the pump in a manner proportional to the energy that the solar field is capable of generating. If the radiation is not enough (at night or because it is very cloudy) the pump will stop automatically and will start when there is enough solar radiation to be able to generate the minimum voltage that guarantees the proper functioning of the pump . There is the possibility of reserving, during the hours of the sun, in a tank or pond the amount of water necessary for periods without sun.

Instalation and maintenance

The installation is simple but must be carried out by professional photovoltaic system installers who know how to carry out a study of the particular needs of each case.

At Electricidad Soma-GenPower we are in charge of carrying out this study for each client and adapting the installation to their circumstances and needs, looking at specific aspects such as the location of the solar panels, the choice of the type of pump according to flow, power, height, etc

As for maintenance, this consists of periodic cleaning of the modules and reviewing the operation of each of the components, especially the situation of the solar panels and the support structure of the panels.

At Electricidad Soma-Gen Power we are professionals in the installation of solar panels in all types of facilities in Lleida, Huesca and the rest of the peninsula, so we are the right ones to carry out a study of your case and recommend the installation that best suits you. adjust to your needs.

If you are interested in a photovoltaic solar pumping installation, ask us for information without obligation and we will offer you the most appropriate solution for your needs.

We also invite you to visit our online store of components for photovoltaic solar installations .
